The Obama Report

Investor's Business Daily takes exception to something Barack Obama said in his speech in Berlin last week.

"As we speak," said Obama, "cars in Boston and factories in Beijing are melting the ice caps in the Arctic, shrinking coastlines in the Atlantic, and bringing drought to farms from Kansas to Kenya."

He followed that up by suggesting that the world "reduce the carbon we send into our atmosphere" with "the same seriousness of purpose as has your nation," apparently unaware that CO2 emissions in Europe, to which he was appealing, grew 2.1% from 2000 to 2004, while U.S. emissions increased just 1.3% over the same time.

What's more, IBD forgets to mention that from 2005 to 2006 emissions in the US decreased by 1.1% while CO2 emissions from German industries rose by 5.4 percent from 2005 to 2006.

Nevertheless, the point is still the same: Barack Obama, in his zeal to paint the Europeans as the good guys and Americans as the bad guys, distorted the facts.

Glaciers are advancing in Northern California, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand and Pakistan. Greenland is not melting into the sea. And while Arctic ice is indeed thinning at 3% a decade, Antarctic ice — which is 20 times bigger — is growing 1% a decade.
